  • Sessions are confidential. They typically involve open discussions with your therapist about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The therapist may use various therapeutic techniques to help you gain insights, develop coping strategies, and work towards your goals.

  • Sessions with individuals last 45 minutes. Meeting with couples are for one hour.

  • Yes, confidentiality is a fundamental aspect of therapy. Information shared during sessions is generally protected. The Fifth Avenue staff works as a team to ensure you receive the best care for you as an individual. No information is shared outside Fifth Avenue Therapy without client permission. One notable exception is if there is risk of harm to yourself or others.

  • Therapy is a collaborative process, and you can communicate your comfort levels and boundaries with your therapist. They will work with you to create a safe and supportive environment.

  • Progress in therapy is subjective and varies for each individual. It's important to communicate with your therapist about your goals and expectations. Regular check-ins between you and your therapist will help assess and adjust the therapeutic approach as needed.

  • Fit is important. Based on your initial assessment, you will be matched with a therapist with whom we think you will be a good fit to address your needs. In the first session or two, you and your therapist will get to know each other and determine whether the “fit” works for you. If it doesn’t, you should discuss your concerns with your therapist and if necessary, you may be transferred to another clinician. You can also let us know at the time of initial evaluation if you have any preferences (gender, age, race, etc.) and we will make every effort to accommodate your request.

  • Usually, therapy works best one on one. If you think it would be useful for you to bring a partner or family member with you to a session, discuss it with your therapist first.

  • Length of treatment varies. Some clients want to sort out a short-term issue and can find relief through brief treatment that usually lasts about three months. Other people may uncover issues they may not have consciously recognized and may want to engage longer. You can always discuss the course of treatment with your therapist.
